India sets standards for green hydrogen

The Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy announced the new emission limits. Going forward, hydrogen will only be considered "green hydrogen" from renewable energy if it has well-to-gate emissions (i.e., including water treatment, electrolysis, gas purification, drying and compression of hydrogen) of no more than 2 kg CO2 equivalent / kg H2. The scope of the definition includes both electrolysis-based and biomass-based hydrogen production methods, it said.

A detailed methodology for measuring, reporting, monitoring and certifying green hydrogen and its derivatives will be forthcoming from the department. TheDepartment of Energy's Bureau of Energy Efficiency is expected to become the nodal agency for accrediting agencies for monitoring, verifying and certifying green hydrogen production projects.
